In this Guide you will find out the item rarity types available as part of Diablo 4 loot system. How to differentiate them from each other, the number of Affixes that can roll on each item quality type, and their aspect categories. Item Tiers, Colors and Affixes

Diablo 4 item rarity and their matching colors

There is a total of five item tiers and these are:

Common – White
Magic – Blue
Rare – Yellow
Legendary – Orange
Unique – Gold
Uber Unique - Pink

Diablo 4 Common Items

These are White items and are the most common, with the lowest rarity in the game. Normal items have no affixes. The best use for this items is to sell for gold or salvage for materials.

Common Items can be traded between players.

Diablo 4 Magic Items

These are Blue items, and the next up on the tier list. Magic Items have higher stats than normal items and can have up to two affixes.

The best use for this items are either, sell for gold or salvage for materials.

Magic Items can be traded between players.

Diablo 4 Rare Items

These are Yellow items that sit right between Magic and Legendary items. Rare Items can roll between 2-6 affixes and overall better base stats than the previous tiers.

Yellow gear can also be upgraded to Legendary Items by imprinting a Legendary Aspect on the item.

This system makes it possible for you to transform any Rare items by adding a Legendary Aspect on it, into a Legendary Item.

The best use for these items is to salvage at the Blacksmith for Upgrade materials.

Rare Items can be traded between players.

Diablo 4 Legendary Items

These are Orange items, bound to your account and can’t be traded. Legendary items are some of the most powerful weapons and gear to equip yourself with while heading towards the endgame.

Legendary Items feature 5 Affixes, with the last one being a Legendary Affix. You can upgrade Legendary Items up to 5 times.

You can find Legendary Items pretty much everywhere in Diablo 4.

*One other thing worth to mention is that you can change the Legendary Aspect on any of the Legendary Items with another one. You can extract the Aspects from Legendary items and use once to upgrade Rare items or modify your current Legendary gear or alternatively you can use your Legendary Aspects from the Codex of Power.

Everytime you complete a different Dungeon you receive a Legendary Power that goes into the Codex of Power.

Types of Legendary Items

there are three different types of Legendary items in Diablo 4:

Legendary Items — these are regular Legendary items.

Sacred Legendary Items — more powerful Legendaries with better Legendary Affixes. You can only get them from World Tier 3: Nightmare onward. Other endgame events like Whispers of the Dead, Helltide Events, and Nightmare Dungeons will drop Legendary (Sacred) items.

Ancestral Legendary Items — the strongest Legendary Orange drop that can only be found once you reach World Tier 4: Torment. Other endgame events like Whispers of the Dead, Helltide Events, and Nightmare Dungeons will drop Legendary (Ancestral) items.

Legendary Items can’t be traded between players.

Diablo 4 Unique Items

These are Gold items, bound to your account that can’t be traded and are the highest tier in the game.

Unique Items feature unique powers usually class specific but also generic for all classes, distinct look, and fixed affixes that can’t be changed.

You can equip Unique Items in every slot to fully deck your character but most of the people prefer to do a combination of the best Legendary items and Unique Items.

Unique items Aspects cannot be extracted.

Unique items have unique stats (that might not be found on other items).

Diablo 4 Uber Unique Items

Although they're still classified as Unique items, Diablo 4 has seven "Uber Unique" items with an incredibly low drop rate.

These are Pink items, bound to your account that can’t be traded and are the strongest in the game with unique stats and effects.

Uber Unique Items feature some of the most unique powers in Diablo 4, distinct look, and fixed affixes that can’t be changed.

You can equip 1 Uber Unique Item in every slot to fully deck your character but most of the people prefer to do a combination of the best Legendary, Unique and Uber Unique Items to achieve the best performance for their Class.

Uber Unique items Aspects cannot be extracted.

Uber Unique items have unique stats (that might not be found on other items).

Uber Unique items can drop everywhere with a very low drop rate, but they can also be target farmed with some of the endgame bosses such as Duriel, the King of Maggots.

According to Blizzard, these ultra rare Unique items drop anywhere you can get a regular Unique, and they can drop from enemies who are level 85 and up.

There is an increase drop rate for Nightmare Dungeons Tier 31 and above, and from endgame boss Durie, the King of Maggots (World Tier 4).

There are 7 Uber Uniques in Diablo 4:

Doombringer (one-handed sword)
The Grandfather (two-handed sword)
Ring of Starless Skies (ring)
Andariel's Visage (helm)
Harlequin Crest (helm)
Melted Heart of Selig (amulet)
Ahavarion Spear of Lycander (staff)

Item Upgrading and Item Level Breakpoints

Item Upgrading

The quality of the gear in Diablo 4 is determined by Item Level. The higher the level the stronger the gear.

Upgrading your items will also increase the Power Level on them. The first few upgrades are fairly cheap but the last ones cost rare materials that only come from salvaging Rare and Legendary Items and from slaying enemies in Helltide Events. (ex. Forgotten Soul)

How to upgrade items in Diablo 4?

Items can be upgraded upgrade with gold. Depending on the item rarity (normal - legendary) the item can be upgraded up to 5 times. Visit the Blacksmith for upgrading your weapons and armors and the Jeweler for accessories.

Upgrading items will increase the item level and all its stats besides the Aspect.

If you intend to min - max your stats we recommend leveling your items only at the endgame so you save as much gold and materials as possible throughout your leveling progression.

New Item Level Breakpoints in Diablo 4

Upgrading past the Level Breakpoint will re-roll and increase all the stats on the Item. All the affixes on the item will be pushed towards next Level Power. For example, if you upgrade an item with 55 Intelligence past it’s Level Breakpoint, it will increase from 55 to the next value ~70. While some affixes change more or less in stats, others like +on skills can go from +1 to +2.

The item power ranges for Sacred and Ancestral items have been adjusted.

Sacred:
- Previous Range: 625–720
- New Range: 625–750
Ancestral:
- Previous Range: 725–820
- New Range: 780–925

Items Aspect Categories

What are Aspects and Gear Slots?

Aspects are divided in 5 categories: Offensive, Defensive, Utility, Mobility, Resource.

Different item such as Weapon, Chest, Rings, etc can only use Aspects for their designated slot.

What Item slot can use what Aspect cannot be changed as this is part of the game design.

Example of Aspects

Amulet: it has all 5 categories at once and you can imprint any type of Aspect. Furthermore, amulet will buff the Aspect you imprint on it by 50%.
Weapons: it has the Offensive category and you can only imprint Offensive Aspects. Weapon Aspects get buffed by 100%.

*Weapon: Offensive 2H (100% Power Increase), One Hand-Off Hand (50% Power Increase)
*Rings: Offensive, Resource (50% Power Increase)
Amulets: Utility, Resources, Defensive, Mobility, Utility (50% Power Increase)
Helm: Utility, Resource, Defensive (50% Power Increase)
Chest: Utility, Defensive (50% Power Increase)
*Gloves: Offensive (100% Power Increase), Utility (50% Power Increase)
Pants: Defensive (50% Power Increase)
Boots: Mobility, Utility (50% Power Increase)

* marks all the items where you can place offensive Aspects for maximum damage output.

Legendary Aspects Explained

Each Legendary item has a Legendary Aspect.

To extract a Legendary Aspect, you will need to visit the Occultist NPC. By doing this the item will be destroyed but you get to keep the Aspect in your Aspect Inventory. Other Legendary Aspects can be permanently added to you Codex of Power by completing all the different dungeons in Diablo 4.

A Legendary Aspect can be imprinted to a Legendary or Rare item:

Imprinting a Legendary Aspect on a Rare item, automatically makes the item Legendary.
Imprinting a Legendary Aspect on a Legendary item, automatically replaces the previous Aspect. Each item can only be imprinted with only 1 Aspect, and it costs gold along with Veiled Crystal crafting material. (obtained from salvaging items)

Other ways to get Aspects:

Clear Dungeons to receive Aspects as first clear reward. They will be added to your Codex of Power and can be used and imprinted as many times as you want.
Extract Aspects from Legendary Items. They will be added to you Aspect inventory and can be used to imprint an item only once, after which the Aspect will disappear from your inventory.

Frequently Asked Questions

“How many stats can items have in Diablo 4?”

Depending on the rarity, Diablo 4 Items can have up to 6 affixes and 1 Aspect imprinted on them. The number of Prefixes is decided by the tier of the item and can’t be changed.

“What is the difference between the Prefixes and Affixes?”

Looking at the Legendary amulet below we can see the following:

7.5% Resistance to All Elements - this is the Prefix of the amulet and is divided by a silver line from the Affixes.
Dodge, Damage, CC Duration, Total Armor - are the Affixes.
The Orange Star - is the Aspect of the amulet

“How to change Affixes on items in Diablo 4?”

To change one of your Item’s Affixes you need to visit the Occultist NPC. You can only change one Affix on any item, locking the rest of the stats on the item forever.

“How many Gem Sockets can items have in Diablo 4?”

Items that drop in the game can have up to 2 Gem Slots.

Items that only have 1 Slot can be upgraded to 2 Slots by visiting the Jeweler NPC.

“Where to find Legendary Items”

Legendary Items can drop everywhere in Diablo 4.

Legendary Items with 100% drop rate:

bosses and endgame bosses
nightmare dungeons
treasure goblins
events
world bosses

“Where to find Unique Items and Uber Unique Items”

1. Unique Items can be found in World Tier 3 and World Tier 4 activities such as:

“Where to find the best Items in Diablo 4”

Currently the best items in Diablo 4 are Item Power 925 and can drop from Uber Bosses and World Bosses.
